The next stops for a popular NHS event have been confirmed in the Black Country.

More than 200 people flocked to the big NHS red bus in Walsall City Centre to bag advice and freebies to help them keep well this Winter.

NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups across the Black Country are behind the events, which aim to raise awareness of the simple steps people can take to keep well during winter. The importance of getting the flu vaccine, how keeping warm can help keep illnesses at bay and reminding people of where they can get help with minor illnesses and aliments are amongst the messages they are keen to get across. Cardboard room thermometers, hand sanitisers, hand warmers and mini first-aid kits are given away at the events to help people to look after themselves and their loved ones.

Dr Anand Rischie, Walsall GP and Chair of Walsall Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We know that winter is a time when small illnesses can have more of an effect on the public. That’s why we are keen to raise awareness about what we can do to ensure that they Stay Well this winter. Fortunately, there is a lot that people can do to help themselves such as getting the flu jab, keeping homes warm and when an illness does strike, they know where they can go get help quickly. NHS 111 is just a phone call away and often the first place to go if you have a non-urgent health need.

“Our bus tour is just one of the many ways that we are reaching out to the people within the Black Country to make sure they remain healthy over the winter period.”

One of the people to visit the bus at the last event was Amanda from Walsall, she said: “I think it’s a great idea to have this type of event on our doorstep because it’s a reminder of what we can do to keep well during the winter. I didn’t realise that flu vaccines were still available, and the room thermometer will come in handy at home especially with this cold weather they are saying we are going to have.”
